Belding Power Outage Cancels Wednesday 9/22/10 Game

The storm from last night has caused the Belding Schools to be closed due to power outages today. Due to the power outages up in Belding the game for tonight has been cancelled. Coach Bowers has asked that any of the kids that can come out and watch the 7th Grade Team "Blue" tonight to meet him at the Tennis Court Entrance to the Football Field to watch the game together. Duncan Lake is on our schedule and it would be nice to see what they have to offer ahead of our game.

Season Opener vs Wayland

The first game of the season for the 7th grade Team "Gold" coached by Coach Bowers, Rick Lawerence, and Carl Olson was played at home vs Wayland Union. The first push down the field led by quarterback Gage Pearson included a 15 yard reception by Tommy Patterson and a touch down by Alex Maurer.

Andrew Gee did a great job rushing the ball down the field throughout the game and was able to get into the end zone during the second half of the game. Once he could get the blocking he needed and find the hole the cats of Wayland had a tough time catching him.

Team "Gold" fought a great battle against the cats of Wayland Union. The game ended in a tie (12 - 12) but in my mind the team won the battle. Both Offense and Defense on Team "Gold" showed that they have what it takes to be successful. The team consists of a lot of new faces this year and it takes a lot to get a group of kids to play together and become a "team". Great job to the coaching staff and all of the players of Team "Gold" with the outcome of Game #1. Our next game is against Belding at Belding High School at 5:00pm. Since HYAA is not part of the Hastings Middle School Athletic program it's the responsibility of the parents / kids to provide transportation to the away games. If there are any issues with transportation please contact Coach Bowers.

Scrimmage vs Wayland & Marshall Done, Next up is Game #1

Our Team "Gold" played against Wayland & Marshall in a "Round Robin" Scrimmage last Wednesday. The Coaches were able to get a good view on what needs to be fine tuned before the Season Opener coming up this week. Our first game will be at HOME against Wayland. Kick-off will be at 5:00pm so please come out and show your support to our team.

On Thursday everyone that participated in the Fundraiser will need to pick up there Cookie Dough Orders at the Hastings Middle School parking lot where the Busses park at 5:30pm. Any orders not picked up will be considered a "donation" back to the HYAA program.

7th & 8th Grade Scrimmage Wednesday 9/8/2010

Both the 7th & 8th Grade Teams will be hosting Wayland Union & Marshall to a "round robin" scrimmage tonight beginning at 5:00pm tonight. The 7th Grade "Gold" and "Blue" teams will share the field and take their turns playing against both schools and the 8th Grade team will begin their scrimmage at 6:30pm. Come out tonight and show your Saxon Pride as the teams use tonight to fine tune things in preparation of their first season game coming up next Wednesday.

Game #4 vs Battle Creek Central2 (BCC2)

Game #4 for Team Blue was against Battle Creek Central's Team #2 down in Battle Creek on Saturday, October 3, 2009. The players found out that Coach Williams had stepped down as head coach and that Coach Maurer and Coach Flood will share the coaching responsibility as "Co-Coaches".

Jordan Kerns was able to run the ball into the endzone to score for the team with Alex Maurer kicking a successful extra point (ends up being 2 points at this level of game play) against the wind. Asa Lenoir caught a pass (1 of 3) on 4th down to move the chains but the team wasn't able to capitilize on it.

The team lost to BCC Team #2 (8-36). It was a difficult game to play as there was a lot of issues with the referee decisions on the field but it still comes down to playing the game as it's designed to be played. Thanks to the coaches for keeping engaged with the players and for doing your best to keep them focussed on doing their part in the game.

Next game is back down in Battle Creek. The team will be playing St. Joe's Team #1 at 11:30 am at their field (Click HERE for driving instructions). Please come out and cheer on the team and show your Saxon Pride!! The next games news that will be posted should hopefully have more "game stats" on the players making the plays in game. It's difficult being on the field taking photo's and not having a way to record the game which would allow me to know "who" did what in the game. I'm going to get some help with this starting with the game vs St. Joe and we'll be able to post more about how everyone is doing. Game vs Lakeview3

Team Blue played against Lakeview Team #3 on Saturday, September 26, 2009 here at home. The boys came on to the field motivated and ready to play and did a descent job on the field. Even though the team didn't win (8 - 26) they seem to be coming together as a team. The defense being led by the Asa Lenoir seemed to gell better in the second half and were doing better with stopping Lakeview. Asa was demonstrating to his teammates that it's better to hit the opponent fast and hard to stop them in their place.

On Offense Alex Maurer was the person to score for our team against Lakeview. He had a great run to the end zone and then followed it up by kicking the extra point. Tommy Patterson caught 1 of 2 passes thrown to him by Elie Flood

The team appreciates all of the support that the parents are providing to them. Every home game we have to provide 3 people to do "Chain Gang" on the field and a few for concessions. If you would like to help out at the home games please talk to Alice Hoffman (Team Mom). Next week's game is against Battle Creek Central at their field.

Weekly News for Week 9/21/09

*Hot off of the Press* information being passed to us from Mr. Murphy...There will be a Football contest this Saturday at Hastings High School's Pierce Field (located behind the school) which is FREE to the kids. The contest is sponsored by the National Football League and the program is called the "NFL PUNT, PASS & KICK (PPK)". The program is a national skills competition for boys and girls between the ages of 8 -15 to compete separately against their peers. Boys and girls compete separately. The four age classifications are based upon the child's age as of December 31st of the current year. Click HERE to head to the NFL Youth Football home page. To view the rules click HERE. All participants' parents must sign the Entry/Release of Liability before participating in any NFL Pepsi PUNT, PASS & KICK competition, click HERE to download the form. All participants must show proof of age at all levels of competition. Failure to provide a birth certificate or religious document (such as a baptismal record) will result in that participant being ineligible to compete, so please make sure you bring both a signed Entry/Release of Liability form and the required "proof of age" document as requested by the sponsors. This week our boys will be playing against Lakeview Team #3 at 3:00pm on Saturday here at our home field. Coach Williams, Coach Maurer, and Coach Flood have been working hard with the boys to get them ready for this week's game. Please have your son to the field no later than 2:00pm (1 hour prior to game time) for the required league weigh-in and team warm-up practice. To help show our team pride, please assist your son with cleaning off the name tape residue and dirt that might still be on their helments for this weeks game. Using normal cleaning spray (Goo-Gone, Windex, etc) and a sponge will do the trick. The team Mom is Alice Hoffman, if you are available to assist with doing "Chain Gang" or "Concessions" at any of our home games please touch base with her at practice or at the games. Last but not least, come cheer on the team this Saturday and show your Saxon Pride as they battle against Lakeview Spartan's Team #3.

Game 2 vs Lakeview #2

Saturday's game was a hard lesson that was given to our boys at Lakeview's game field. The game was plagued with turn-overs to missed blocks and tackles and allowed the team to be defeated with a score of 12 - 47. Hopefully the boys will motivate each other to work together during practice this week so that they can be prepared to play against Lakeview Team #3. The game will be at HOME with kick-off at 3:00 pm on Saturday, September 26, 2009.

Weekly News for Week of 9/14/09

The Saxon Spirit Bus - ran and operated by Terry McKinney - will be at Johnson Field at Baum Stadium for this Wednesday night's 7th & 8th "Gold" Team's Home Games. Kick-off is at 5:00pm & 6:30pm respectfully. Come out for Tailgate Party starting at 5:00pm and help support our Saxon teams!

Your cookie dough fundraiser will be delivered on Thursday, Sept. 17th at 5:30pm. Cookie Dough must be picked up at this time. Any cookie dough not picked up will be donated back to the HYAA program. Talk to your Team Mom or Coach if there are any issues with picking up your son's cookie dough.

HYAA Players and cheerleaders are invited to the Varsity Home Game on Friday, Sept. 18th. Players will get into the game for free (parents will need to pay for their own entry). Players will be introduced by team at halt-time of the varsity game. Players should wear their game jersey. Players will need to report to the North end of the field by the new field house with 4 minutes to go in the 2nd quarter so that they can get organized for the half time introductions.

Season Opener vs Marshall Team #2 (16 - 26)

The boys of "Team Blue" played a challenging game against Marshall's Team #2 on Saturday. The first half of the game was difficult because Marshall stopped our teams rushing attempts and at half time we were scoreless. Our coaching staff (Coach Williams, Maurer, and Flood) circled the wagons at half-time and made some modifications to the game plan to trip up our competitor.

The second half of the game was night and day different due to changes that the coaches had made. Instead of keeping the ball on the ground the quarterback started passing the ball downfield to his receivers. With mixing up the plays between rushing and a passing the team was able to take the momentum away from Marshall and were able to finally shut the door on them. A good mix of plays allowed our team to score 2 touchdowns with Alex Maurer kicking successful PATs (Point After Touchdown - at this level of football kicking the football between the goal posts and 2-point conversion are reversed in their value) after each one of them.

It was exciting watching the boys turn things around. Even though they didn't win the game they did put on a great show the second half. Both the offense and defense turned things up and gave Marshall a good fight. Final score, 16 - 26. Over the next few days the Coaches will be working with the team to fine tune things for our next game. Our next game is AWAY against Lakeview #2. Click HERE for driving directions to the game field. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 pm which the players are required to be at the field 1 hour ahead of time for the mandatory team warm-up practice and league weigh-in.

It's finally here, Game Week!! The Hastings High School Varsity Team will be playing Wayland here at our home field on Friday 9/11/2009 @ 7:00 pm and Coach William's "Team Blue" will be playing Marshall 2 on Saturday 9/12/2009 @ 5:00 pm. Come support both groups this weekend and show your Saxon Pride!!
